Powys council tax could rise by nearly three per cent

Council tax in Powys could go up by as much as 2.99 per cent in the next financial year, it was revealed today.

Powys County Council’s board will meet tomorrow in Llandrindod Wells to discuss the increase and members have been asked to support the proposed tax rise for 2011/2012.

The increase, if agreed, would mean that council tax for the average band D property will go up from £889.17 to £915.76, a rise of £26.59.

If tomorrow’s meeting agrees to the increase, the budget for 2011/12 will be recommended to the full council.

Any rises in tax by the town council, police and community council will then be added to the county council precept to calculate the overall council tax bill Powys residents will have to pay.

In a report, which will go before the meeting, Councillor Tony Thomas, portfolio holder for finance, said £16 million worth of savings needed to be found by the council over the next four years.

He said the council planned to make £250,000 worth of savings through a voluntary redundancy scheme over the next 12 months.

He added: “£250,000 is anticipated from the voluntary redundancy scheme with a similar sum the following year. This is based on 20 staff taking advantage of the scheme and their posts being deleted.”

I find it curious that the header picture to an article on council tax shows someone filling in an income tax form. It does however serve as a reminder that income tax, unlike council tax, is based on an individual’s ability to pay. With huge rises in prices unmatched by rises in wage and pensions a good many people will have difficulty meeting ANY rise in council tax but will have no choice. At the other end of the scale, even palaces are taxed no higher than council tax band G. As always, middle and working class Britain bears the brunt. Scrap this iniquitous tax now and replace it with something based on disposable income.
