£30m Shropshire Council cuts ‘will bring misery’

Moves to scrap council projects across Shropshire in a bid to save more than £30 million will cause a “lot of misery for a lot of people” it was claimed today.

The concern about the proposed cuts was voiced by Geoff Forgie, who is a leading campaigner for the disabled. The capital programme hit-list being presented to the Shropshire Council cabinet next week.

It includes a proposal from officers to reduce by £2.4 million over the next four years the “top-up” made to the Disabled Facilities Grant received from Government.

Mr Forgie, chairman of the Shropshire Disability Network but expressing a personal view, said: “These cuts are going to cause a lot of misery for a lot of people, and not just the disabled.

“As a disabled individual I am deeply concerned over the proposed cuts, and particularly the Disabled Facilities Grant.

“The cuts will mean, for example, that a disabled person unable to go upstairs, will need facilities downstairs such as a shower or bath, but without the help of a grant what will they do?

“In this current climate, moving is not an option.”

Plans to reduce spending on the structural maintenance of secondary roads has led to concern being expressed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

A RoSPA spokeswoman said maintaining roads was important from a road safety point of view, particularly for vulnerable users such as motorcyclists and cyclists.

She said it was unrealistic that road safety would be immune from budget cuts but it was crucial that road maintenance was not cut severely and that the council focussed on priority areas.

Council leader Keith Barrow has stressed millions of pounds will still be ploughed into county projects.

Capital spending will amount to almost £95 million in this current financial year and just over £171 million from 2011/12 to 2014/15.

Councillor Barrow said it would be a “tough” decision to scrap the 50 schemes from the capital programme but the council had little choice in the face of unprecedented Government cutbacks.

Labour opposition leader, Alan Mosley, said yesterday a “new dawn” had broken in Shropshire and people could see for the first time the devastating impact of cuts.

A new dawn indeed , the reality is clear for everyone ; once again labour governance has practically bankrupted this country , Labour did it again they spent recklessly money they did not have . Who would want to pick up the mess they’ve left, its a simple fact no one wants to make such cutbacks but in the national interest a coalition government ,a majority government seeks to firstly cut waste in the public sector before implementing the enevitable tax rises on the electorate. Labours only resolve is taxation the destroyer of wealth creation. How could we of been so stupid?

You read that in ‘The Sun’ didn’t you, Pete?

I can tell, because of the similarities in spelling and grammar;-)

And as with the outpourings of ‘The Sun’, it’s all very simple to some people. It’s all Labour’s fault.

Except it isn’t really, is it? If the Tories had been in power then, we’d *still* have been in a not-too-disimilar situation to what we are now.

Because economics is a complex subject and when the bubble bursts – as it always does – it burst for lots of countries and economies around the world, and for all kinds of reasons. I’m sure you’re right in the sense that Labour didn’t really help, or see it coming. But then neither did the Tories, while they were in opposition, did they? It’s easy to be wise after the event.

But I do grant you that for all the talk from the Labour party nationally (and the Labour group on Shropshire Council for that matter), if either were now in power, the cuts would actually be very similar. They’re just a means for the Labour group to play politics at present.

You haven’t addressed why any of this should justify Shropshire Council spending hundreds of thousands on new senior level jobs when telling everyone else particularly the disabled – as well as everyone else that they’ve got to make cuts. Much bigger cuts. (No doubt their PR people are drilling councillors and senior officers on what to say on that subject even as I write this).

When you’ve flipped through ‘The Sun’ again to see if they’ve got any answers Pete, get back to us eh?

So, none of the mess is the fault of the bankers who loaned money for all those sub-prime mortgages to anyone who asked?

Presumably Labour are also responsible for the messes in Ireland, Greece, Portugal and the massive US deficit?

Your point about taxation might be valid as well, if the government hadn’t put up VAT to 20%.

Time to ferret some millions out of Philip Green and his offshore pals instead of taking it from the disabled and genuinely needy. And let’s not hear the usual blather about scaring away talent, I even suggest rescinding their UK citizenship if they prefer not to contribute I mean let’s face it patriotism doesn’t seem to be high on their agenda anyway.

…. and unfortunately the working classes upwards suffer! The rich get unfairly taxed even more than they did before, the middle classes got no support and higher taxes, the working classes get crippled while the benefits class carry on regardless. Although the benefits class will probably moan about duty on cigarettes and alcohol increasing.

Never mind. Shropshire is going to boom with posh restaurants and foody boutiques. Cheer up!
