Shropshire’s most crime-ridden streets revealed

Shropshire’s most crime-hit street was today revealed as Bishopdale on the Brookside housing estate in Telford.

The street saw 27 crimes committed in December according to the newly-launched police crime map website.

Hills Lane, in Shrewsbury, with 25 crimes, and Coney Green, Oswestry, with 19, were the two next worst trouble spots.

The county crime map shows that more than 1,300 crimes were committed in Shropshire in December and revealed that Shrewsbury has one of the highest crime rates per head of population in the country – with rates higher than those in Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds.

Shrewsbury had the highest volume of crimes committed during December with 365, followed by 268 in Telford and 207 in Oswestry.

Bishopdale saw 18 anti-social behaviour crimes, four violent crimes, two vehicle crimes and three other crimes while it was a similar story in Hills Lane where 16 anti-social behaviour crimes were reported along with four violent crimes and five other crimes.

Ten anti-social behaviour crimes took place in Coney Green with two violent crimes and five other crimes.

The crime map was launched by police last week and allows people to see how many crimes are committed on any street in England and Wales.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Sorry, I’ll pick myself up off the floor now.

There are going to be some very red-faced Shrewsbury residents reading this right now. You know who I mean; the ones who love posting derogatory comments about Telford on this forum.

    Yep,

Couldn’t help a little smirk about that one myself…

Perhaps these figures (and the facts that they’ve actually reported them) will change the editorial standpoint of the Star, which despite being based in Telford rarely seems to miss an opportunity to put the place down.

    Ohhh this is priceless !!!!

Dear Shrewsbury residents; why not up sticks and move from your crime ridden slum to live in the officially much safer climes of sunny Telford !!!!

And while you at it, close that hospital quick and bring all the equipment over here where it will be much safer before your Fagin-esque scallywags nick it all lol !!!

Seriously though, this says a lot about the quality of information being portrayed in this new Crime Mapping system – I would suggest it’s not all ‘crimes’ but qualifying (for that stats purposes) ‘incidents’

What’s the betting a great deal of the calls in Shrewsbury are ‘anti-social’ and nighttime economy related due to the town having a proper centre of evening entertainment, thereby swaying the scales disproportionately ??

Or maybe Telford really is a safer place to live ???

I think you might have a hard job persuading The residents of Kingsland to move to Woodside, Telford. I think you have a good point, little crimes get reported more in Shrewsbury.

Likewise persuading residents of Coalbrookdale/Coalport/Jackfield etc to move to Harlescott/Sundorne/Castle Fields – so it’s a bit of a silly argument really.

Hills lane is in the town centre, people from all parts of Shropshire use that area on the weekend, you would expect it to have problems. Living in an area with such high crime rates is a different matter.

I’m not in the least surprised by these fugures. I had the misfortune to live on Brookside for a number of years. My house was broken into 3 times and my cars broken into on several occassions and saw the same and worse happen to neighbours.
The police did virtually nothing when they eventually turned up, so criminals had little fear of being caught.
NO happy memories of living there

All very well and good but what type of crime is very important whether you like it or not.Crime in Shrewsbury I would assume is very low level crime, ie not many muggings, rapes , murders, etc , more like shop lifting, drunken damage etc and most based around the shrewsbury night clubs etc we need to know what the crimes were?.We need to know the statistics for solved crime?.

Same boring comments from the Telford v Shrewsbury group. I live in Shrewsbury, it suits ME better than Telford. My area is almost crime free and very quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of people in Telford who would say the same about their area. Shrewbury is a beautiful place, amazing buildings, great places to eat. In the nearly 40 years I’ve been here I’ve hardly ever seen trouble. I know the places to avoid on a weekend and I bet the same can be said about Telford. If someone has offended your home town then your best reponse is to tell them what’s great about your area, not join in and slate the other persons town.

Has anybody thought that Shrewsbury has the highest crime rate because the Telford scally’s come over to Shrewsbury to commit their crimes because the pickings are that much better than in Telford.

    Dear Telfs

You all seem to have self esteem issues, for which I pity you. We residents of Shrewsbury are perhaps slightly more intellectual enough to realise that statistics are affected by a number of factors such as reporting & detection rates. Also the severity of crime would also be quite important – we would rather have 10 instances of graffiti than one of violent disorder or rape.

In conclusion then, theses statistics really mean nothing & I guarantee that not one Shrewsbury resident would rather live in Telford as a result.

I am surprised that no-one has suggested the cause might be due to the mobility of criminals.

Recognising there may be softer targets in Shrewsbury than in Telford, Liverpool, Manchester …. the average criminal might consider getting in their car and heading to Shrewsbury for an afternoons looting and pillaging. Just suggesting.

The data are for December 2010 only, and are mostly dominated by ‘antisocial behaviour’. No real surprise that a long town centre road near lots of pubs and clubs is going to suffer from incidents in the run-up to Christmas.

‘Antisocial behaviour’ will probably include – graffiti, broken windows, public urination, drunk and disorderly behaviour, arguments with door staff, brawling, aggressive begging, indecency in the public toilets, etc.

A nuisance, yes, but I don’t think this is the end of the world.

What is an Anti Social Behaviour Crime? I believe these are reports of anti social behaviour and can range from petty things such as kids playing football in the street. Maybe more get reported in Shrewsbury as people have a higher expectation of how their neighbourhood should be as it is a lovely place to live. I have lived in Telford for 33 years and the last 2 in Shrewsbury and the last 2 have been by far the more pleaseant. As a previous posting Shrewsbury does at least have a main town which counts for a lot of the ASB figures but in the 2 years I have lived here I have never seen a fight where as when I visit relatives in Telford I have to watch the lovely youths hanging outside my parents house shouting, swearing and drinking. It doesn’t matter where you live there will be crime.

Not really a surprise 1) there is probably nicer stuff to pilfer in Shrewsbury as they are richer, 2) Telfordites probably don’t commit crime on their own soil so go to Shrewsbury to commit the crimes…it’s who commits crimes as well as where they are committed that will tell the whole story, bet there are more telford crims than there are shrewsbury crims – but then the good ole SS isn’t gonna try to look into it a little bit more – or perhaps thats tomorrows story?

Are we going to hear about the sort of crime happening in Shrewsbury? I have friends who live in a fairly nice area of Telford and they put up with so much more than we would in Shrewsbury. I’m guessing anti-social behaviour just isn’t tolerated in Shrewsbury and gets reported. You only have to walk through the two town parks to see the difference. Telford has lovely play areas, but then you get some really unpleasant people using them.

There’s a report in tonight’s Star of a cannabis factory in Shrewsbury. Presumably that’ll be people from Telford going to Shrewsbury just to grow their drugs then?

You’ll be telling me it’s because the climate in Shrewsbury is better for growing drugs next…

Ironically a few years ago my mother in law was visiting from Birmingham and a man was stabbed right next to us in the town centre so that and her experience of walking the gangplank in the floods and nearly falling in has influenced her view of the place no end!

I think to be a young male in Shrewsbury or Whitchurch, for example, can prove to be more threatening than places like Manchester or Birmingham.

haha, I do love a bit of Shrews v Telford banter, but wouldn’t it be nice if the Star actually showed a breakdown of the figures?

For all we know, all of Shrewsbury’s are the residents association complaining that someone under the age of 45 has sat down in the quarry, and Telford’s could be residents complaining about all the prams in the town centre you cna’t walk past!

    Give us FACTS! please?

I agree with J, a breakdown of crimes would be helpful. On the crime map I have one burglary and one Vehicle crime. I’m hardly going to stay awake worrying about that, I still feel Shrewsbury is a lovely place.

Just for clarification, I have no interest in any Shrewsbury vs Telford vs anywhere else battles, but it does amuse me when people instantly take sides and get all offensive / defensive, which is what I’m really commenting on above.

All places have their nice parts and their not so nice parts. I’ve lived in some of the roughest parts of Manchester and Liverpool and the types of crimes there are not even in the same league as most of the crimes reported in Shrewsbury and Telford. Guns, hard drugs, gangs and serious organised crime are run of the mill, while the really nasty stuff I’d rather not bring up are definitely more prevalent.

What would be interesting is if a weighting, based on seriousness, could be applied to each type of crime, e.g. 1 for mild/petty through to 10 for the worst kind, then the number of occurrences multiplied by the weighting to obtain a truer picture of how “dangerous” a place is.

I moved to Telford about 20 years ago from “darn souf”, the Slough area. I wasn’t sure what to expect as the move was all a bit hurried. Anyway, I have fallen in love with what must be one of, if not the most, beautiful & charming counties in the UK.

I would like to think that I’m adopted by Shropshire, I certainly feel completely at relaxed & at home here. My son was born here.

Stop your shouting at each other; it’s childish & immature, instead, meet on top of the Wrekin; survey en-mass the beauty that surrounds you & appreciate your fellow Salopians.

If you want a reality check, go to B******l or C****y in Slough. I know of nowhere in Shropshire nearly as dangerous. For the first 5 years up here I thought I was on holiday!

Count your blessing & think (before you slag each other off further)just where you could have been born / living but for a flick of the wrist. You don’t know how lucky you are. Trust me.

This argument is ridiculous. I’m sure even the richest parts in the country have a substantial crime rate, this doesn’t mean they are bad places to live. A lot of crimes are committed in town centres on saturday nights due to people not being able to handle their drink. This doesn’t mean you should flee your home because its suddenly the bronx! Please… I’d be stunned if there were less than 300 crimes in telford which has a population of 160,000! Clearly some skewed crime reporting going on? I saw 5 crimes in one night alone in wellington 3 weeks ago!

I lived in Telford for 3 years and moved on to Shrewsbury last year. Sorry but Shrewsbury is a far nicer town in general than Telford. Nothing to do with crime rates even – Shrewsbury has character rather than a conglomerate of towns bundled together with vast roads and a network of roundabouts. It has places to socialise, eat and drink within walking distance.
