Shropshire services are improving, says health boss
Saturday 12th February 2011, 11:55AM GMT.
Health services in Shropshire are already improving thanks to a county wide consultation on the future its two main hospitals, according to the chief executive of the NHS trust.
Adam Cairns, chief executive of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, told a joint health overview and scrutiny committee meeting including councillors from Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire councils that the consultation – which is due to end in mid-March – was having a positive impact.
He said: “Even if nothing happens at the end of the consultation, it will not be wasted work because we have found ways of improving our services now.
“We are improving the services today as a result of the work we are doing.”
Under the plans woman and children’s services would be concentrated at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, with acute inpatient abdominal surgery consolidated at the Royal Shrewsbury.
The Shrewsbury site would also see the creation of a vascular surgical centre and both centres would keep their A&E units.
Speaking at yesterday’s meeting, Mr Cairns said: “We are confident the money will be there and confident, although it will stretch our ability to produce a balanced trust which we need to do by 2014, we can do it.
“We can’t go on for much longer, we are going to have to spend a lot of money in the buildings or replacing the buildings.
“There is risk to the services if this doesn’t go ahead, it will impact on the health of the community in Shropshire, there is a risk of people going out of the area to hospitals.
“We have got two very small units, if the reorganisation fails we can’t stand by and wait for them to fail, if we can’t find a solution in Shropshire we have to find a solution with another trust.”
