The brother of Amrit Kaur Ubhi today said his father had failed to answer why he had murdered his defenceless and harmless sister.

Harmeet Singh Ubhi said his sister had the rest of her life ahead of her and despite a week-long trial he did not know what had pushed his father, Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, to strangle her.

The 29-year-old said there were still too many unanswered questions.

Speaking about her death for the first time, Harmeet Singh Ubhi said: “I don’t feel like Amrit has gone – she will always be there.

“She was at the best time of her life – she was ready to settle down.

“She was on the plane of life which was ready to take off. She was someone who had her life planned ahead of her.”

He said his sister, who was training to be a teacher, was extremely popular and had “touched so many in her short life”.

Harmeet Singh Ubhi said he did not feel “anger” towards his father but “confusion” as he had failed to explain why he killed her.

He said his sister, who was just 4ft 11ins tall and weighed just over eight stone, would not have harmed anyone – refuting Ubhi’s claims she jumped on him.

“Why would he (his father) do that? He’s given his story in court but there’s only me and my mum who know what led up to it. It had been going on for about 18 months,” he said.

“I want to know why and what pushed him to that point – he had no reason to try and restrain her for anything. She was harmless,” Harmeet Singh Ubhi said.

“Even before she was my sister, she was his daughter first – who would do that to their own flesh and blood?

“I want the truth from him as to why he did that. He’s done something very selfish for no reason at all.”

He said his father had become “childlike” and controlling in the 18 months before he murdered his daughter and did not want either of his children to do anything without his permission.

He said Ubhi caused trouble over minor issues and was in a constant “battle” against them and himself.

“I thought he was just ranting but didn’t think he was going to do anything to his own daughter,” he said.

“It’s not about forgiving him now – he’s taken something more important than anything else. He’s taken a daughter from her mother – a daughter she had so many hopes and dreams for.

“What he’s done to Amrit, he’s done to me because I’m his flesh and blood. I want him to answer my questions as to why he did it.”
