Fire has destroyed a Shropshire rugby club changing rooms, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

The fire ripped through Highley Rugby Club’s clubhouse in Netherton Lane burning equipment and training aids and taking out the electricity supply, putting floodlights out of use.

Players now face rebuilding their headquarters and buying new equipment.

The alarm was raised just after 6pm last night.

Leon Aspin, club co-founder and one of the first people on the scene, said: “I saw a glow in the sky and thought it was a bonfire but getting closer I realised it was the changing rooms.” Mr Aspin said he was worried someone might have been inside the building.

He said: “I had a torch and managed to check and see the doors were all still secure. Someone else had raised the alarm, the blaze was so fierce all we could do was watch.”

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 45 minutes.

Mr Aspin said: “We have lost everything, training aids such as scrum pads and the equipment to mark out the pitch.”

Police said they and the fire service were investigating the blaze, which they were treating as “suspicious”.
