The worst of the flooding was over for Shropshire today as the deluge which ravaged parts of the region moved on down the River Severn into Hereford and Worcester.

Levels peaked yesterday in the county, with the waters rising by as much as 17.5ft in some places and flooding low-lying areas along the river.

However, flood warnings were today still in place at Ironbridge, Bridgnorth, Hampton Loade and Highley.

Among those hit by the floods yesterday was the Boat Inn in Jackfield where the pub was left swamped by 3ft of water.

Flooding is a regular occurrence at the pub and so landlady Jenny Alexander said she had been prepared.

She said: “We got our flood warning on Monday morning and so friends and volunteers rallied round to clear out everything on the ground floor.

“By the evening the water was coming over the river bank and then I woke up yesterday morning to find it coming into the pub. It’s not as bad as the 2008 flood but it was unbelievably fast.”

Water levels were also falling in Bridgnorth today, at 13.9ft after a peak of 14.5ft at 7pm yesterday.

Environment Agency spokeswoman Sharon Robinson said: “The highest levels have now passed down through Shropshire and are heading down towards Hereford and Worcester.”

Shropshire Council today said a number of roads in Shrewsbury and Atcham still closed due to the flooding. Frankwell and Frankwell Riverside car parks stayed shut.

In Bridgnorth, Doctor’s Lane and Severnside were closed. And Ironbridge’s Wharfage remains closed to traffic with flood barriers due to stay in place until 4pm.

The flooding must be serious if it’s moved down the Severn into Hereford.

Can’t quite understand Shrewsbury flooded – we’ve only just moved into the area of Ludlow and last night I drove from Ludlow to Wrexham to study my Welsh course, at my Welsh course some people asked about the flooding and I hadn’t heard anything about it. My route to Wrexham takes me through the middle of Shrewsbury so confused as to why I didn’t notice any of the flooding, presume I must have drove round it??
