Armed police called to Telford ‘knife brawl’

Armed police were called to a Telford street during a brawl between a gang of men, believed to be brandishing knives, which erupted after an argument.

The clash broke out in Brandsfarm Way, Randlay, just after 7pm yesterday after a row started between the men. It is understood the dispute involved neighbours from the street.

Armed officers were called after reports that one of the men was brandishing a machete.

A man in his early 50s suffered head injuries, a car was damaged and police made three arrests.

The area remained under police guard today while inquiries continued.

Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said the injured man was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and later transferred to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent.

He said the man’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening. He was under sedation and officers were hoping to speak to him later.

Mr Ammonds said a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill, assault and possession of a bladed implement. He remained in custody at Telford’s Malinsgate Police Station.

Two youths, aged 14 and 16, were also in custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

Mr Ammonds said: “We had a call just after 7pm about disorder in Brandsfarm Way and a report that various individuals were making threats towards each other, there were knives involved and it threatened to get out of hand.

“A significant number of officers attended, including armed police, and at least four or five individuals were found to be involved in the disturbance.”
