Shrewsbury swimming pool’s £11m spent on other projects

SHIREHALL CHIEFS have spent £11 million put aside for Shrewsbury’s ageing swimming pool on other projects because of cash pressures, it was claimed today.

Shropshire Council today confirmed it had spent the money – which had previously been set aside by the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council exclusively to revamp or rebuild the pool at the Quarry.

Eileen Sandford, a former mayor of Shrewsbury, today criticised the move.

She said the cash had been transferred to the former Shropshire County Council in 2009 before the unitary Shropshire Council was created and claimed officials had been given strict guidance that the money was to be used for the pool.

Staff at Shropshire Council said, although the cash was ringfenced by SABC, it had not been included in their capital programme.

Mrs Sandford said she believed it was unfair on the town that the money had not been protected for the swimming pool and instead could be used for other projects across the county.

She said: “About £11 million was handed over by the borough and it was specifically for the pool.

“It was put to one side for the build and we had done the consultation and then unitary arrived and everything stopped.

“I feel very strongly that we should be doing something about it. Why should all the rest of the county get all these schemes and we aren’t getting what we need in Shrewsbury?”

Mrs Sandford claimed bosses were “wasting money” at the present pool complex on huge heating bills as it was so inefficient.

Neil Willcox, head of leisure and outdoor recreation at Shropshire Council, said: “We understand money was originally ringfenced in the previous Shrewsbury and Atcham’s Borough Council forward capital programme for improved pool provision in Shrewsbury.

“This was not subsequently included in the new Shropshire Council Unitary forward capital programme except as an aspiration.

Councillor Stephen Charmley, cabinet member for leisure, has said plans for pool revamp had been shelved for up to five years.

so they have taken Shrewsburys money and spent it in Oswestry, Ludlow etc, isnt this exactly what the anti-unitary majority said would happen!?

    • Henry

Actually, the anti-unitary brigade were saying the exact opposite! They said money would be spent only on stuff in the county town… how wrong they were… and it’s obvious that they were: what percentage of county councillors represent Shrewsbury divisions? Less than half, I can assure you…

I’ve always been surprised that we have to pay to park at the leisure centre. If they removed this restriction many more people would use the facilities.
Secondly, why do we need 4 pools. Perhaps they should turn one pool into a soft play centre for small children. This is a great money maker during the days and I’m not aware of any similar facilities in the town centre.
The leisure centre needs to come up with ways to fund itself.

Why do you have to pay to park? Maybe it’s because the car park doesn’t maintain itself and has to be paid for. Why should taxpayers and those who can’t afford to run a car subsidise your leisure time?

So just what have Shropshire Council done with this 11 million pounds exactly!!!!!!

Has it been spent in Shrewsbury??? The money originally came from Shrewsbury & Atcham tax payers I presume so should be spent on Shrewsbury.

There sure be more answers on this!

Shrewsbury needs a public swimming pool. Swimming is the best exercise for all ages and all school children should be taught to swim – it saves lives.

Its called Shropshire County Council not Shrewsbury County Council. When will you lot realise that.

By the way, Telford ( you know, that place you call a dump ) looks set to get a large water park that will rival Waterworld in Stoke.

I think you are missing the point! Also there is no longer a Shropshire County Council there is a Shropshire Council.

The new Shropshire Council was formed following the demise of Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council, Shropshire County Council, Oswestry Borough Council and various Shropshire District councils. I’m not sure who had this bright idea but who ever it was has probably now left on some monstrous pay off. Perhaps thats where the swimming pool money has gone?

The money which Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council had ringfenced – alledgedly 11 million pounds – was I assume collected from Shrewsbury’s council tax payers. It seems it was sensibly set aside for the refurbishment or renewal of the Quarry Swimming Pool. I think the tax payers from the old Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough area have a right to know where the money has gone!!!

I have never called Telford I dump. I used to live and work there. Good luck with the new Telford Waterworld, Council Offices and refurbished leisure facilities etc, etc, etc….

I’ve been to Waterworld in Stoke with my kids. Whilst they enjoyed the messing about in the water and the slides etc. it’s not a place where you can actually swim – it’s just too crowded and anarchic. Dpn’t confuse it with a swimming pool.

Have only recently started using the Quarry last year and I can only begin to imagine what it must have been like in it’s hey day. It’s obviously on it’s way out despite, what seems to me, a valiant effort from the staff and desperately needs replacing.

It’s criminal that the funding has been lost, Shrewsbury could be the proud owner of a fantastic new swimming facility, properly designed and built at the Sports Village it would be a boon to the town. As it is at the minute, much loved though it is, it’s just not in the right place.

As for having your belongings stolen from your locker Jade, that’s obviously a distressing thing to happen to anyone but to hope that customers have stopped using the facilities resulting in many job losses is just bitter and downright unpleasant.

With all this publicity about the pool you would think it would be about time there was a positive for a refreshing change.

1, how many centres offer public swimming all day everyday and offer a vary of times for clubs, schools etc

2, Rats possible paddling pool or small dogs

3, why do we need 4 pools mon – fri 3 of them are used by the school to learn the pupils to swim, ok close the main quarry pool and the wont be able to use the facility until late afternoon

4, soft play area its not a child creche

why was the monies used for other projects,

I would of thought the obviuos soluction to this is to sell the original site to build a new council offices instead of moving or descremating the town’s quarry beautiful area,
why they need more offices when the shirehall should be made adequate etc,
with the money from the sale of the towns bath they should build a new swimming pool on the buisiness side end of town nr charlies.b+q etc, with adequate free parking etc to encourage more people to used the facilities.
    are the councilers complete morons..

Well thats a real shame, the facilities are inadequate for a town of this size.
I imagine more residents could be persuaded to partake in a splash if the place wasn’t so grotty. The intense waft of what can only be described as eau de human waste that hits me every week as I enter the changing rooms is enough to make me puke but then I’d have to go and stick my head down the toilet emanating the stench. There’s better ventilation in my dilapidated Victorian bathroom. Someone needs to take a big vat of bleach to the place.

Can somebody tell me why there is not a pool at the Sundorne Sports centre ? but why they built a useless bowling hall.I would also like to know why there are no cricket pitches ? but 12 football, which are nothing better than a dogs toilet. Why should the players on these pitches have to roll in this filth. Where is Health & Safety ??

I’m dismayed at this news, although hardly surprised that the funding has been frittered away elsewhere(most likely). And where has it gone?!!!

Not only does this send out a poor message to families and children about successive governments’ lack of real desire to do anything about obesity and the health of the nation, but for people like me with long-term , life-limiting respiratory illness I (and others) rely on affordable, good quality, easily accessible, hygienic and well-maintained swimming facilities to responsibly look after my health and save the NHS unnecessary expense!

As is too often the case, people making such decisions to divert funding have the luxury of being able to take their good health for granted and so have no concept of what this means to us who would really benefit and need good swimming facilities.

    very frustrated!

Driver, Go down to the Sundorne Sports Village and see all the rubbish that is left behind after football matches. When you hire a football pitch you should be made to leave it as you found it, why should the rate payers have to pick up the bill for clearing the rubbish up.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on swimming facilities, as poster no 11 says the changing rooms at the Quarry are disgusting and nothing would induce me to use them, let alone take my small daughter there. We used to travel to Church Stretton to use the pool there, it is basic but the pool and changing rooms are absolutely spotless and it is cheaper to use than the Quarry. Allowing for my petrol, it was cheaper for me to drive there than to drive into town, pay to park and use the Quarry pools. Maybe some money could be spent on extra cleaning and security staff?

    Hi Sarah

I visit the faciliity several times a week, and would say that ok, they can never be spotless due to the ammount of people using them not forgeting we come in from out side so bringing in debris on our shoes. I can remember one occasion when the staff were having to clean toilet paper which had been thrown on the walls. this would surley put a strain on the resourses. I would say that if I was to find the changing room in a mess im sure if you informed a pool attendant they would clean it up

go to a proper nice posh private one like rowton castle gym or even bannatynes, its always tidy not because of the staff cleaning well but because they dont let chavs in, if shrewsbury pool did this and especially banning the children it too would be nice and clean all the time
