Oswestry group draws up town wishlist
Wednesday 2nd February 2011, 5:28PM GMT.
An Oswestry campaign group is drawing up a wishlist to help attract shoppers into the town centre when a new supermarket is built. Members of OS21 say they want to see traders and tourism boosted by cash or help.
This may be provided by a legal 106 agreement from the potential new store and cinema development at the Smithfield livestock market.
The group has put pen to paper to request cash or help for local businesses, to make the town more attractive and to invest in open spaces.
The list, which could be added to by other town campaign groups, will be posted to Shropshire Council.
Jessie Miller, spokesperson for OS21, said: “We are in the processes of drawing up a wishlist for the 106 agreement.
“What we hope for and want is investment in the town and we are putting together the ‘shopping list’.
“The key thing is that, if a development goes ahead, the town centre will need to up its game and improve what it has to offer.
“The wishlist includes support for small business, help to develop the market and investment in community spaces.
The wishlist comes after town councillor and chairman of Oswestry’s Civic Society, Saffron Rainey, raised concerns over the lack of a voice in Oswestry as the Chamber of Commerce lost core members.
Yesterday he said there was a “vacuum,” during a “really critical time”.
A meeting at 6pm today at the town’s Wynnstay Hotel aims to recruit new members for the chamber.
