A Shropshire businessman is hoping to stem the tide of rural pub closures by transforming a village pub from a wreck to a showplace – and all in time for Christmas.
Wellington businessman Peter Morris bought The Huntsman, in Little Wenlock, last year, and now he has grand designs on transforming it into the thriving business at the foot of The Wrekin that he remembers from his childhood.
He said: “When I was 15 I used to come up here with my parents and sit on the car park on a Saturday night and have a Vimto.
“The people here then were Peter and Barbara Holling and you couldn’t get in it. It was that successful. And that says it to me, that we could have those times back again if the job is done right.”
Mr Morris, who has a car dealership in Wellington, plans to completely refurbish the pub, demolishing and rebuilding whole sections. He said he firmly believed there is a future for the village local, and added the majority of people in Little Wenlock welcomed the redevelopment.
“The Huntsman is going to be a total free house,” said Mr Morris. “We’re going to be in charge of purchasing our own beer and our own spirits. Also we’re going to have accommodation and a nice restaurant.”

Such wonderful news!! Just wish it was going to be ready by the time we arrive in May! Best Wishes Mr. Morris and hope to see how it turned out in 2012!

Good luck! It’s in a great location. I remember detouring through Little Wenlock a few years ago to check it out, as I knew there was a pub there and was on a reconnaissance mission to find somewhere decent to eat and drink. I was disappointed to find it was a bit of a dump. If all goes well, I’ll be adding it to my list of favourites. I hope we’ll see a great selection of local ales from the likes of Ironbridge, Salopian, Ludlow, etc.

Best of luck fighting the greedy brewers and government tax hikes.
