Campaign to save Castle Caereinion Primary School
Wednesday 2nd February 2011, 2:19PM GMT.
Campaigners plan to bombard councillors with hundreds of protest letters as part of their fight to save a Mid Wales primary school from being closed.
Up to 150 people packed into a public meeting last night to voice their concerns over the future of Castle Caereinion Primary School, near Welshpool.
The school is one of 11 on a closure-threatened list by Powys County Council because they have fewer than 30 pupils.
At last night’s meeting in Castle Caereinion pupils, staff, teachers, governors and residents called for the school to be removed from the list as itl has 38 pupils.
Letters pleading for the council to stop a review of the school going ahead this summer will now be sent to education officials and all 73 county councillors.
One concerned parent David Round, from Castle Caereinion, said it was clear the county council had made an error with its figures.
He said: “This school doesn’t fit the criteria to even be on the list.”
Resident Colin Lewis, who has grandchildren at the school, said: “Why should ratepayers’ money have to be wasted on a review of Castle Caereinion school, which quite clearly shouldn’t be happening?”
Canon Bill Rowell, chairman of governors, said pupil numbers would increase to 42 from April.
He said: “There are five good reason why this school has a place in the community now and why it will have in the future. It has great academic records, it forms the heart of the community, it is a church school, the school buildings are not unfit for purpose and we do not fit the council’s criteria list for less than 30 pupils.”
Powys County Council said is to meet governing bodies of all schools.
