Councillors in Bishop’s Castle have called on Shropshire Council to accept liability for any compensation claims from gardeners tending allotments next to a planned £5 million biomass plant.

Members of Bishop’s Castle Town Council have claimed the health of people tending to allotments at the town’s business park could suffer as a result of emissions from the plant.

And they believe Shirehall officials – who approved the application for the plant before Christmas – should be responsible for any health and safety issues.

Town councillors have also called for monitoring equipment to be set up at the business park to measure levels of emissions coming from the plant as soon as it is operational.

A deal is on the verge of being agreed for a new 125-year lease to secure the long-term future of the allotments at the business park.

It would end fears that the allotments could make way for the new biomass plant.

Councillors discussed the lease at a meeting last night and agreed the terms in principle. They also claimed they would be interested in leasing more land if it became available.

Councillor St John Penney said: “We would like it in writing from Shropshire Council that they will bear responsibility for any health problems arising from biomass.”
