Thousands back Wrexham & Shropshire campaign
Tuesday 1st February 2011, 8:00PM GMT.
Campaigners have hit their target of 5,000 signatures for a petition to try to save Shropshire’s direct rail-link to London.
Running on the Petition Buzz website, the petition – aimed at getting the service back into operation – was launched in the wake of the shock announcement last week that the Wrexham & Shropshire rail link was closing after the service had lost nearly £3 million in the last year alone.
This morning, the petition had 5,593 signatures.
Today, Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski said he was prepared to present the petition in Parliament once its organiser, Alex Matthews contacted him.
County MPs and officials at Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin councils are continuing their fight to save the link, with hopes it could be included in the West Coast Mainline franchise when it is re-tendered.
The service came to an end on Friday, less than three years after it was launched in the county.
Meanwhile, Telford MP David Wright today said all of Shropshire’s MPs and the MP for Wrexham had agreed to attend a meeting with Transport Minister Theresa Villiers if it could be arranged.
He added: “The key thing is to focus on securing a direct service. It may be that we can resurrect an open access services. More likely we’re going to have to talk to one of the big franchise players.”
Two Welsh AMs have questioned why Assembly rail subsidy funding could not be used to save the Wrexham & Shropshire service.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales Eleanor Burnham said it was “ludicrous” that some of the subsidy paid to Arriva Trains Wales could not have been used for Wrexham & Shropshire’s link.
And AM Mark Isherwood has posed an emergency question to Welsh Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones.
Mr Isherwood asked the minister if there was any way he could drive a renegotiation of franchise and open-access arrangements.
Mr Wyn Jones said the service was outside “existing franchise agreements”.
He said: “The company operated it without a subsidy and was therefore subject to commercial risk in doing so. If another company comes forward with a proposal, then we would be in a similar position in relation to subsidy.”

This is good news, but will the people who signed this petition actually use this service? After all, this is the reason it has stopped, lack of use, hence lack of revenue…

The petition is obviously worthwhile and without wishing to de-vaule it, the problem is that not enough people were using it outside of the busy Friday and sunday afternoons.
Basically the route needs a subsidy which I believe it currently does not receive unlike many other lines. If Mr Kawczynski can get that via his presentations in parliament then the route might be saved yet, but on customer numbers alone, there just clearly isnt the revenue to keep it going, even with 1 million signatures on a petition.
Come on Government….cough up and give the people of the West/North Wales the subsidy to run the route they deserve

When will they get it? We don’t want it included in another tender. We want Wrexham & Shropshire back. We want that excellent service, friendly staff and local food and drink. Subsidy NOW, not later.

At the same subsidy rate of the other rail companies, with equal access to passengers, routes and stations.

The petition shows the strength of local feeling about the loss of this service, however with everything in the private sector “profit driven” I don’t think another company would want to take this service on if they can’t make it pay.
Becuase the Tories sold off the railways it’s the passengers that have to suffer, whilst the shareholders get richer. The only answer is take the railways back in to state ownership, this will never happen as the Tories hate any form of state ownership.

If all the people whom are rushing to sign this petition had travelled on this service then it would have never closed down, market forces i’m afraid. I’m sure none of you that have commented would bother going to work if it was costing you more than you earned so explain why this service should run at a loss?
