Bridgnorth Town Hall reopening hope
Tuesday 1st February 2011, 6:30PM GMT.
Bridgnorth Town Hall could reopen soon, nearly five weeks after a pipe burst.
The leak was discovered on New Year’s Eve under Bridgnorth Town Hall and the town council has been waiting since then for it to be fixed. Meanwhile, the High Street building has remained shut because of a lack of water supply.
Anne Wilson, council clerk, said she had rung Severn Trent five or six times but it was only today that workers turned up to fix it.

It’s surprising that Bridgnorth has retained its ancient Town Hall. Long may that remain.
Ludlow’s luckless Town Hall was demolished in the 1980s, but visual memories of it were captured for posterity in the BBC comedy Blott on the Landscape.
Without a meeting place, Ludlow Town Council, said to be the most dysfunctional local authority in England & Wales, was forced to move into the ancient Buttercross building. but then that too was closed for lack of disabled access.
Today, Ludlow Town Council meets in a glorified portacabin in the redundant car park of the derelict former Borough offices at Stone House in the town’s Corve Street. Prestigious it ain’t.
The Buttercross, every bit as impressive as Bridgnorth’s Town Hall, is set to become a Heritage Centre (whatever that means), pending a huge injection of Lottery cash. How times change.
Let’s hope the people of Bridgnorth can retain their public buildings better than Ludlow has managed.
