Oswestry town park in £35,000 boost
Monday 31st January 2011, 1:47PM GMT.
Oswestry’s town park is to get new play facilities thanks to a £35,000 plus windfall from housing developments and youngsters’ views on plans will be sought.
The money will improve the playground at Cae Glas Park, but could also be used to provide play facilities for older children.
The money will be handed over by Shropshire Council to Oswestry Town Council which, through the Cae Glas trust, runs the park.
It was given to the former Oswestry Borough Council by builders of the Maserfield and Lakehold housing developments in lieu of providing play equipment close to the houses.
Now Shropshire Council’s outdoor recreation service is working with the town council to look at upgrading the play facilities in the park.
Glenys Davies. facilities manager for the town council, said the news would be given to Oswestry Youth Council later this week and views would be sought on what type of play provision was needed.
There will also be consultation with primary schools after which plans will be drawn up for a town council meeting in March.
“It is hoped that any improvements and new play equipment can be installed before the school summer holidays,” she said.
Town mayor, Councillor Elaine Channon, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been given this money. We desperately need more play equipment in the park, particularly for the older children. We have had to take away some of the pieces in the playground because of health and safety fears.
“I am a great believer in children having the chance to use their imagination for adventurous yet safe play and I hope the new equipment will given them that chance.”
