New phase of Telford Southwater development submitted
Monday 31st January 2011, 2:42PM GMT.
Plans have been submitted for the next phase of the £250 million Southwater development in Telford which will see the building of the centrepiece of the scheme.
The application submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council is for a main street and squares.
It also includes plans to install benches, CCTV, lighting and water features.
Work started at the end of last year to clear the site ready for building to begin.
A near 1,500 page document has been submitted with the application.
It says: “Delivering Southwater is a key objective for Telford & Wrekin Council.
“The enclosed proposals for public realm works will provide the infrastructure from which future planning applications for buildings can be brought forward and ‘lock into’.
“It is particularly important that Main Street, the new public squares and spaces, the underlying drainage and the levels are established to ensure the overall level development of Southwater in years to come is comprehensive and structured within the vision for the area.”
The £250 million scheme, bringing shops, bars, cafes and hundreds of homes to the town centre, is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs over the next 15 years.
The development is also expected to create up to 700 construction jobs.
Council leader Andrew Eade said of the project earlier: “This is an exciting time for the development of Southwater and for residents across the borough.”
He added: “We are creating a vibrant social and economic hub that will transform Telford’s town centre.”
The proposals are expected to go before the council’s plans board for a decision later this year.
