Public consultation to start on Powys secondary schools
Friday 28th January 2011, 1:49PM GMT.
Public consultation on the future of all 13 secondary schools in Powys will start next week, council bosses revealed today.
Powys County Council said it would be holding meetings at all secondary schools and Coleg Powys campuses across the county between February and April.
A consultation document with a questionnaire has also been produced and will be available on the council’s website from Monday.
Copies will also being sent out to parents and guardians in the next few weeks.
Controversial plans to radically transform secondary education in Powys, which could result in the closure of sixth forms, have already been approved by councillors.
Management could be streamlined and schools merged after the council’s ruling board backed the big shake-up last month.
Councillor David Jones, board member for schools, said: “The authority, schools and the college are facing serious challenges.
“A huge amount of work has already been done to look at ways of tackling the problems of falling pupil numbers, physical conditions of buildings, curriculum pressures, changes in legislative requirements and the need to provide more opportunities through the medium of Welsh.”
Meetings are due to be held from February 16.
