Letter: Time for the UK to start making things again
Friday 28th January 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
Letter: Today I heard on the radio an interview with Mr Morgan, nanaging director of Morgan Cars, the only independent car manufacturer in the country.
He stated for car design and technology we lead the world but this won’t last unless we manufacture on a large scale ourselves.
The problem is governments dragging their feet and the banks not investing in this country. They’d sooner get quicker returns all over the world.
We must work our way out of recession not depend on the crumbs of the multi-national banks and insurance companies in this nation, in which we, the people of Britain, have a large ownership.
If we depend on imports, once they have the monopoly, they will squeeze and squeeze till you’re dry. Painful.

Britain was once know for it heavy industry, however much of that was lost durin the Thatcher era, when the UK began its move to a service and consumer economy, leaving the UK at the behest of the service industries like financial services.
It has also not been helped by a large number of British Companies outsourcing manufacturing and services to places like China and India.
As for the banks in which the tax payer has an interest, which are RBS and Lloyds, plus Northern Rock, they have also outsourced jobs to other countries during the short life of this current government, given the level of unemployment in the UK, no organisation in which the taxpayer has an interest should be allowed to do this.

why cant they make a small affordable car which people can afford rather than the +£50,000 ones.
Why if you want a new car for less than £6000, you have to buy foreign. Surely we could produce a car which is the same price (or less) as there would be less tax on these vehicles?

we do produce small cheap cars in this country the trouble is they are made in factories owned by foreign firms

Get Mr Morgan to build me a car from “carbon nanotubes” and not the wooden ones he makes at the moment. At a price where I don’t have to sell my children to Angelina Jolie or Madonna to pay for it and I might just give it some thought.
