Museum idea for Oswestry Guildhall

Museum idea for Oswestry Guildhall

Oswestry’s former county court at the top of the Guildhall could prove the ideal home for a museum for the area, town councillors have said.

But the town council says it does not have the funds to take on the responsibility for a museum.

A steering group, Oswestry Heritage Forum, has been exploring the issue of how to create a museum.

Councillor Chris Schofield said although the council did not currently have the money, it was something it could look at in the future.

Councillor Martin Bennett said running a museum would be expensive and, if reliant on volunteers, would need a large number of helpers.

“I understand it is estimated that to run a branch library would need about 60 volunteers,” he said.

But he did suggest that, if someone was prepared to take the task on, then the town council’s Guildhall may be able to provide a home in the former county court at the top of the building.

Councillor Owen Jones said sadly moves to bring a museum to Oswestry many years ago had come to nothing.

Suggestions by the forum included a hospitality day to launch the idea and invite people and organisations to bring local artefacts.

Other suggestions included talking to community groups and working with Oswestry Library, the Discover Shropshire group, the heritage centre, Oswestry Civic Society and the town council to move the project forward.

The report added that an umbrella group could be set up to take the idea on.

This forum would discuss applying for charitable status and plan and look at arranging activities for this year’s Heritage Open Day weekend.

I am supprised that the town has not got quite a big museum, Oswestry is an old town and must actually be steeped in history.
History happened yesterday as well as many yrs ago, give me a treat on a future visit and let me and my Suisse wife look at all our yesterdays in one place called a museum.
