A landlord at a Shropshire pub is facing being stripped of his alcohol licence after assaulting his partner during a booze-fuelled row, a court has heard.

Matthew Clarke, 28, of the Bull Hotel, in Bull Ring, Ludlow, admitted assault after pushing partner Melanie Milner into a sofa at the pub on January 7.

Telford Magistrates' Court heard yesterday that Clarke's actions had caused Miss Milner to suffer a nose bleed, problems with her teeth and swollen lips.

Miss Sara Beddow, prosecuting, said a police licensing officer had asked for magistrates to remove Clarke's alcohol licence.

Miss Beddow said: "The nature of the offence was that the defendant pushed Miss Milner away, causing her to hit her face on the arm of the couch, during a physical confrontation under the influence of alcohol.

"The defendant told police he and Miss Milner had a rocky relationship due to their alcohol abuse and the pressure of running a public house."

Clarke, representing himself, said he deeply regretted the incident.

He said: "It is very difficult to run a public house, but I hold my hands up and take full responsibility."

Sentencing was adjourned until February 16 to allow pre-sentence reports to written.

Bail was extended, subject to Clarke not contacting Miss Milner.
