Telford youth who drove at pedestrian is locked up
Wednesday 26th January 2011, 11:00PM GMT.
A teenager motorist from Telford who deliberately drove at and knocked down a pedestrian has been sent to a young offenders’ institute for three years.
Adil Khan, 19, of Manor Road, Arleston, had denied attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Lamahl Green and dangerous driving. But Khan was found guilty by a jury after trial and was today sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
Khan was given a three-year custodial sentence for attempting to cause GBH and a 12-month concurrent term for dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for four years.
The court heard there was ill feeling between Khan and Mr Green at the time Khan spotted his victim walking in Princess Avenue, in Arleston, on April 6, 2009.
The court heard Khan turned the car around and accelerated at Mr Green and a friend who were crossing the road.
Judge Robert Trevor-Jones said Mr Green’s friend avoided injury by leaping out of the way but Mr Green was struck on the hip and fell to the ground before Khan drove off. Mr Green suffered injuries to his ligaments and soft tissue in his leg and needed extensive physiotherapy.
Mr Sunit Sandhu, for Khan, said Khan was genuinely remorseful for his actions and for the injuries he had caused to Mr Green.
Speaking outside court, Detective Inspector Pete Brophy, of Telford CID, said: “This was a deliberate act and has caused long term damage to the victim.”
