Shock Shropshire bowel cancer figures released
Monday 24th January 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
More than 200 people in Shropshire are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year with almost half of those dying from the disease, it was revealed today.
The figures were released as part of a campaign to encourage more men to get screened for the disease.
Data shows 243 people in Shropshire are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year, resulting in 110 deaths.
The figures show that in Telford alone more than 80 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year with almost half of those dying from the disease.
Among those backing the Beating Bowel Cancer 1,2,3 Campaign is Telford MP David Wright. He said today: “If we improve participation in the screening programme we can diagnose these cases earlier and save lives.”
Doctors say if the disease is diagnosed early, more than 90 per cent of patients could be treated.
Beating Bowel Cancer says more lives could be saved if participation in bowel cancer screening matched other national cancer screening programmes in England.

The problem is the diagnosis. My dad suffered excruciating pain, vomiting and weight loss for months. At first he was told a virus was to blame, that then changed to gall stones, then with increased constipation further tests..
He came to live with me and it was only when my dad was crawling round the floor crying and I kicked up a fuss to get a home visit from the GP that he got admitted to hospital. It was diagnosed within 24 hours but by this point it was too late. He died 2 weeks later.
That was nearly 9 years ago.

My Dad had gone to his Dr in july who found issues with his blood and blew him off, he had severe weight loss, feeling he needed to pass his bowel every 2 mins, he was slave to the bathroom …very classic symptoms, the Dr didn’t follow up or send him for a check up, even though his blood test come back showing signs of anemia and other issues!!! He was also a Parkinsdons patient…I can’t see how any Dr who had seen my Dad previoulsy could have thought he looked noraml..by the time I saw him he was yellow, weak and his stomach distended!!! Unless you enter through AE they will let you die a slow death. The Dr’s I dealt with were arrogant and can’t stand that you suggest anything as their rgo’s don’t allow them to be openminded!!! You can ask for a screening if the Dr would not let their ego’s get in the way of their judgment!!!!
