Oswestry council poised to take over car parks?

A Shropshire town’s local authority car parks could be taken over by its town council  – raising hopes parking could be free on the sites on Sundays. Oswestry Town Council is lined up to take over three sites.

The council already runs three car parks and it is hoped parking rates would remain among the cheapest in the county.

Town councillors recently held what it said was the most fundamental review of its car parking arrangements for many years.

Town clerk David Preston said the council had been talking to Shropshire Council about future partnership working, which could see the town authority taking over the Festival Square short stay and the Oswald Road and Oak Street long stay car parks.

He said: “We are talking about the potential devolution of Shropshire Council’s own car parking service in Oswestry to the town council.”

Councillors last week voted to retain free car parking on its Central, Smithfield and Horsemarket car parks on Sundays and to keep them short stay, to encourage shoppers to visit.

It increased the all day cost of parking from £5 to £6.

It has also included £40,000 in its budget for the coming year for car park equipment upgrades which could include vehicle recognition software and a further £6,000 for pay and display improvements.

Shropshire Council took over the Festival Square short stay car park and the Oswald Road and Oak Street long stay car parks when Oswestry Borough Council folded when the unitary authority was created.
