Offender warned to avoid hunt leader Otis Ferry
Saturday 22nd January 2011, 11:29AM GMT.
A Shropshire man who was found with a number of items stolen from the home of Otis Ferry has been warned to stay away from the hunt campaigner.
Mr Ferry, the son of 80s pop star Bryan Ferry, was burgled three times at his Shropshire home between 2007 and 2009 and had items of clothing and wine taken.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday Nigel Harris, of Lower Cross, Cross Houses, Shrewsbury, admitted receiving stolen goods.
The court heard some of Mr Ferry’s belongings were found at Harris’s home in June 2009.
Other property was found at his uncle’s address and more in an empty accommodation block at the University of Kent in Canterbury.
It was discovered that Harris, 35, had been living in the accommodation.
Judge Robin Onions, who heard that Harris had told a probation officer that he was commercial pilot, told him he should “stay in touch with reality” and realise that he was tiptoeing on the edge of custody.
Harris was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and given a 12-month supervision order.
Miss Samantha Powis, for Harris, said he had not known Mr Ferry and that all the recovered property had been returned to him.
But Judge Onions said: “I suspect you know more about this than you are prepared to say. Mr Ferry was deliberately targeted by the burglar or burglars.
“If you are involved in any way with Mr Ferry in future you will find yourself in prison. You tiptoe on the edge of custody.”
Ferry is the joint master of the South Shropshire hunt and is a fox hunting enthusiast and prominent pro-hunting protester.
In 2004 Mr Ferry hit the headlines when he stormed the House of Commons in protest at the hunting Bill.
