Bridgnorth’s Charlotte is top science blogger – at age eight
Friday 21st January 2011, 12:00PM GMT.
She may be only eight – but Shropshire schoolgirl Charlotte Dixon is proving age is no barrier to success as an internet blogger. The youngster, from Bridgnorth, has been named the top blogger on a US science website.
Charlotte, who goes to the town’s St Mary’s Bluecoat School, said she was delighted after seeing hers was the most visited blog on scienceforcitizens.net
Her proud mother, Mar, said: “She usually blogs about science experiments she does but she always blogs about the National Geographics Kids magazine her aunt, who lives in the States, buys her for Christmas every year.
“One of her blog reports became popular at the end of last year on Twitter and Facebook – and not just in the States. National Geographics even picked up the story and did a tweet about her.
“And to top it all off Charlotte recently found out that she was the top member blog of 2010 on Science for Citizens, beating some impressive blogs.
“The voting was compiled by the most views on the blogs.”
In her blog the year four pupil wrote about her favourite articles from the November edition of National Geographics Kids.
She wrote: “Whale Saves Diver – This is about Mila the beluga whale which saw something weird in her pool on the day of a diving contest.
“One of the divers dove down with muscle cramps. Mila went down to rescue the diver. Mila turned them up-right then gently grabbed the diver’s leg and pushed her up to the top of the water so some other people at the top of the water could pull her out!”
Her mother said Charlotte’s first blog had been about a year and a half ago and had included subjects such as experiments they had carried out.
Mar said Charlotte was “quite excited” to have been named the most popular blog.
She said she put no pressure on Charlotte to blog and she did it when she felt like doing it.
Charlotte is not only a keen blogger, she’s also a reviewer for publishers who send her children’s books to read before they come out.
In a recent blog, Charlotte wrote about animals featured in National Geographic Kids.
She wrote: “The main article was on Secret Life of Sea Turtles.
“At first I wasn’t too sure about this article, but actually it was educational but fun. Secret Life Revealed was about how the sea turtles reacted to the secret cameras called Crittercam (well, they thought they were secret but the turtles knew about them).
“The scientists were able to learn about sea turtles and the way they moved and did certain things.”
Another blog read: “There is a great big poster of my favourite animal – the giraffe!
“I adopt a giraffe from my local zoo Dudley Zoo. My giraffe is called Sophie (my middle name). I have also loved learning about giraffes.”
