Shrewsbury road section to close for blast repair works

A section of road in Shrewsbury town centre will be closed over three weekends as final repairs are carried out following last year’s major explosion.

Shropshire Council will be carrying out paving works in the area which suffered huge damage in the blast on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road on January 3 last year, which left 12 people injured, five seriously.

Most of the repair work has already been carried out but officials say they need to close the right turn from Bridge Street into Mardol Quay over three Sundays, starting on January 30.

Laura Owen, council spokeswoman, said: “We will be putting some new slabs on the pavements on Bridge Street later this month.

“During this work there will be a no right turn from Bridge Street onto Mardol Quay and Smithfield Road on January 30, February 6 and, if needed, February 13.

“Traffic will be diverted to Frankwell roundabout and back.”

Town councillor Andrew Wagner said the disruption was necessary in order to make sure the area is restored to good order.

He said: “It’s been a bit of a long process but it’s nice to see that all the debris has gone now and the Morris’ building has been sorted.

“It’s good to see that the council is actually replacing the paving slabs rather than just using tarmac which it seems to be doing in other areas of the town as a ‘quick fix’.”

Councillor Wagner said he hoped that those seriously hurt in the explosion, including Panto star Kiley McDonell — who was left partially paralysed — and flatmates Scott Godbold, Sarah Pearse and Sam Devine-Turner and their friend Annie Davies, who also suffered burns, would soon find out why the blast happened.

I have recently been informed STCRA do not like pastiche yet after the explosion they wanted planners to retain the 1930 pastiche building at any cost which was not feasible the damage being so great.
And STCRA wrote to say that they were very concerned that this corner when eventually developed could look remotely like a 2010 development!
They need not worry the mediaeval back of the shopping centre will be inspiration for whatever is built.
