Shropshire businessman to lead enterprise partnership
Wednesday 19th January 2011, 12:05PM GMT.
Leading Shropshire businessman Dr Geoffrey Davies has been appointed to lead the newly formed Marches Local Enterprise Partnership.
Dr Davies, managing director of McConnel Ltd in Ludlow and vice-president of vegetation maintenance machinery company Alamo Inc, was named the founding chairman of the new partnership following a round of interviews yesterday.
The Marches LEP, made up of private sector business and covering the unitary authorities of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Herefordshire, has been set up to take the lead role in the region’s economic development, aiming to create conditions for enterprise to flourish.
It will fill the gap left by the Advantage West Midlands regional development agency.
Dr Davies, who was awarded an OBE for services to agriculture and rural areas in 2004, said: “This partnership between businesses and local authorities is a great opportunity to put the Marches on the map, creating economic growth and supporting businesses.
“We will work hard to create conditions for a strong, diverse and enterprising business base resulting in an increase in sustainable private sector jobs. Achieving this will not be an easy task, nor can it be done without the active participation of all partners both private and public within the Marches.”
The LEP will champion bids to the Regional Growth Fund and other funds to help create jobs, while supporting business.
