90 sacks of litter collected from Shrewsbury stretch of A5
Wednesday 19th January 2011, 5:00PM GMT.
An “incredible” 90 sacks of litter, ranging from sweet wrappers to car bumpers and wheels, was collected along a five-mile stretch of the A5 near Shrewsbury in just one night, highways chiefs said today.
The waste on the eastbound carriageway heading from Preston Island towards Telford was collected by Shropshire Council workers between 10pm on Friday and 4.30am on Saturday.
The road was closed at the time by the Highways Agency and Amey Mouchel for highway maintenance works.
More than 10 tonnes of road sweepings were also collected during the night.
In February, a further litter pick will be carried out along the A5, from the Welshpool Road roundabout to Dobbies island over seven nights.
Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for transport and IT, said: “It is incredible that such a huge amount of litter was collected along such a short stretch of road.
“Not only is littering illegal, it costs the council, and council tax payers, over £500,000 each year to clear up, which is why we take the problem extremely seriously, and will look to prosecute anyone found throwing litter.”
Shropshire Council is running an anti-litter campaign. To report a problem call 0345 678 9016.
