Telford & Wrekin could get community wardens

Town wardens with the power to hand out on-the- spot fines for littering and dog fouling could soon be walking the streets of Telford & Wrekin.

A new scheme is in the pipeline to appoint town wardens, whom the borough council wants to help tackle car parking issues and anti-social behaviour.

Telford & Wrekin Council is working with West Mercia Police to introduce the wardens, who would operate alongside community support officers patrolling the borough.

Council spokeswoman Jenny McGregor said: “The council currently funds five community support officers who are employed through West Mercia Police. However, under the new scheme, these CSOs would have du-ties more closely aligned to a new Telford & Wrekin Council town warden scheme.”

The council’s ruling cabinet, which meets next Tuesday, is being recommended to approve the scheme.

Councillor Miles Hosken, cabinet member for community protection and cohesion, said: “The new town warden scheme would support Telford & Wrekin Council’s borough towns initiative and our drive to tackle anti-social behaviour and reassuring communities to make them feel safe.

“We are working closely with West Mercia Police and our partners through the Safer Telford & Wrekin Partnership.”

…any chance of them being given the power to arrest and fine (heavily) people who spit in public places?

What a good idea. Why not take it a step further and do away with the police force and traffic wardens altogether. There must be plenty of people out there who would revel in being given a bit of power.
I would wager there will be a few vigorous confrontations between the public and these community wardens.
    Another half-baked recipe for disaster.

Can we afford such luxuries? CSOs don’t appear to have earned their money!

Denis. On what do you base your claim that the “CSO’s dont appear to have earned their money”?

This is great news! hopefully they will employ one of these “town wardens” and he/she will be situated by the William Brooke School in Much Wenlock as i sit there every day waiting for my son and witness lovely old dears walking their brown Labradors, Jack Russell etc fouling the pavements along the road and walking off without so much as a blink! some days i have been rather tempted to get out of my car and hand her/ them, a poop bag it makes me so angry! All the children walk this route! i have 2 Staffordshire bull terriers and i NEVER walk away without cleaning up after them! what gets me more irritated is the fact that at the end of this road is a poop bin!!!

Unfortunately we only get what we deserve. Yellow lines appeared because people would not use common sense when parking, then traffic wardens came along to fine those who still behaved badly. Then we had speed cameras because drivers refused to obey the law of the land, which was there to protect everyone. Now we get dog fouling and other anti social behaviour, so we will get wardens to deal with it. Without these additional checks, the country could by now be in chaos because of the actions of a selfish minority. When EVERYONE starts behaving responsibly, then there will be no need for such deterrents.
