River Severn flood fears recede
Tuesday 18th January 2011, 10:37AM GMT.
River levels in parts of Shropshire were dropping today as the risk of flooding in the county fell following heavy rain at the weekend.
The River Severn at the Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury peaked at 2.7m last night.
But a flood alert, the lowest warning meaning flooding is possible, remained in place throughout the county today and on the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence.
Shrewsbury’s Frank well car park was open again today. It was closed yesterday as a precaution, causing snarl-ups in the town. All other car parks in the town were open but the low-lying Gravel Hill Lane was closed due to flooding.
Emily Poyser, a spokeswoman for the Environment Agency, said the situation was being monitored.
She said: ”We’re not expecting much rain over the next couple of days so river levels are falling.”
She said the situation would be reviewed if there was more rain later in the week.
