Taxi licence switch could cost Telford council £120,000
Monday 17th January 2011, 10:52AM GMT.
A decision by private hire drivers in Telford to jump ship and get their licences from Shropshire could cost the neighbouring authority more than £120,000 a year, it was revealed today.
About 600 private hire drivers in the town could give back their licences to Telford & Wrekin Council and instead apply for hackney carriage licences from Shropshire Council as the fees are lower.
Nigel Horler, chairman of Telford Private Hire Operators’ Association, said there was potential for 600 drivers and 400 cars to make the swop.
Under Telford & Wrekin Council’s proposed fee rise, an operator’s licence would cost £200, plus £45 per car, while a private hire licence would cost £170 per year.
Drivers with hackney carriage licences are able to undertake booked appointments anywhere in country.
Telford & Wrekin Councillor Miles Hosken, said at this stage any figure named was “pure conjecture”.

Good luck with dealing with Shropshire County Council’s offices. You will need it.
Plus be prepared for border checks every time you try to enter or leave Shropshire.

Has anyone pointed out to them that they can’t. Shropshire Council licences do not cover Telford and Wrekin. So the drivers can drop people off but they cannot pick passengers up in Telford. Oh, and Shropshire intend to increase fees sharply in March, as reported in the Star.
