Summer opening for Oswestry leisure centre
Monday 17th January 2011, 5:24PM GMT.
Oswestry’s new £8 million leisure complex should by open for the summer, Shropshire Council officials said today.
The news comes after the town’s ageing leisure centre suffered from several problems in recent weeks.
Temperature problems plagued the two swimming pools and the cafe also had to limit its service.
The new Oswald Park Active Lifestyle Centre, currently being built in Shrewsbury Road, is beginning to take shape with much of the exterior work and roofing nearly completed.
The current centre on land close by was said to have a 25-year lifespan when it was opened in the early 1970s and has struggled on for an extra decade.
Staff at the centre said the cafe was now now fully open again and temperatures back to normal in the pools.
Building work on the new centre was halted last year when contractor Frank Galliers Ltd went into financial difficulties.
Shropshire Councillor Steve Charmley said work on the new complex was moving forward. External pavings have been laid, internal walls built, the walls and floor of the swimming pool constructed and the pool operating plant was being installed, he said
He added: “After the disappointment of the original contractor going into liquidation, it is great to see this project moving forward.”
