Fresh inquiry call on Dawley attack victim’s death

A police investigation could be relaunched after a man who was attacked and left for dead in Telford 18 months ago died at his home. Ismaeel Rehman was attacked in Heath Hill, Dawley, on July 17, 2009.

He was found in the street with serious head injuries and taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

Mr Rehman, who was in his 20s at the time of the attack, died at his Dudley home on New Year’s Day after it is believed he suffered an epileptic fit.

His family want police to find out if the head injuries he suffered as a result of the attack could be linked to his death. Detectives in Telford are awaiting test results before deciding whether to reopen the investigation.

A Home Office post mortem will take place to find out how Mr Rehman died. Seven men were arr- ested in connection with the attack at the time but were released without charge.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “Police in Telford have been advised of the death of a man from Dudley who suffered head injuries in an incident in Telford in July 2009.

“We are awaiting the results of tests before a decision is made as to whether the investigation will be re-opened.”

A spokeswoman for the Black Country coroner said they had been informed of the death but an inquest had not yet been opened.
