Council wants to be public voice over Shropshire hospital changes
Monday 17th January 2011, 8:10AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town Council is looking to become a “voice for the public” over plans to shake up the county’s two main hospitals and is urging people to direct its stance on the town’s possible loss of paediatric services.
More than 200 people attended a public meeting on Thursday night at the Greenhous Meadow, in Shrewsbury, to discuss proposed changes at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s Princess Royal.
Town council chairman Peter Nutting said it evoked great passion.
He said the council would take a fresh look at plans at the next full meeting on January 24 and believed it should become a vehicle for people to express their views.
He said: “There were a lot of members of the public and hospital staff at the meeting and a lot passion was shown.
“The loss of the paediatric and children’s services is a real worry to them.
“This is a very local issue affecting people who have spent a lot of time and money on the children’s services at Shrewsbury hospital.
“Members of Shropshire Council come from all over the county so I think it’s important for the town council to take up the issue as the voice of the public in Shrewsbury.”
Under new proposals women and children’s services would be concentrated at Telford, with acute inpatient abdominal surgery consolidated at Shrewsbury.
The RSH site would also see the creation of a vascular surgery centre. Concerns expressed at the meeting mainly centred on the need to keep the children’s cancer unit and full range of paediatric services at Shrewsbury.
