Students to stage road race in memory of tragic Lewis Smith

Students at a Shropshire college have announced plans to hold a road race to raise cash in memory of a Shropshire teenager who died from a rare heart condition.

The parents of 15-year-old Lewis Smith, from Howle, near Newport, had asked for people to come forward to help them organise a major fundraising event.

The teenager’s mother Joanne Smith, 43, was speaking earlier this week after a coroner ruled that Lewis’s death after collapsing during a PE lesson at Burton Borough School in Newport on November 16 was caused by the undetected medical condition myocardial ischaemia.

Now staff and students from Harper Adams University College in Edgmond, Newport, will hold the Harper Adams Five10 run on March 27 to collect money for the Lewis Smith Memorial Fund.

One of the organisers, Sue Henderson, said: “It will be a busy day at Harper Adams with a farmers’ market at 10am, plus Student Rag activities including a barbecue. We are, of course, very pleased to be supporting the Lewis Smith Memorial Fund, just one of the worthy causes the run will raise money for.

“We are delighted to be involved with this local annual event which raises a lot of money for some very worthy causes.”

Severn Hospice and Farms For City Children will also benefit from cash raised.

The run will carry on the legacy of the annual EdgeAhead races in Edgmond, which ended last year.
