Man jailed for glass attack on musician at Telford charity concert
Saturday 15th January 2011, 11:38AM GMT.
An unemployed Shropshire man who hit a member of a band playing at a charity concert with a glass has been put behind bars for a year.
Shaun Reilly, 20, of Buttonwood Glade, Ketley, Telford, was drinking at the Sinclair Social Club, Holyhead Road, Telford, at midnight on March 6, last year, when he intervened in a fight between a friend and a member of a band playing at the venue, hitting a 36-year-old man on the head with the glass.
Reilly, who had earlier admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.
Judge Robin Onions sentenced Reilly to 10 months’ detention at a young offenders’ institute and a further two months for breaching a previous court order.
The judge said: “This is an extremely serious assault, in a public place, under the influence of alcohol and involved a number of people and you have absolutely no business in getting involved.
“If you had been sober and sensible you would have realised.”
Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said: “The complainant is punched and once on the ground he is hit with a pint glass.”
Paul Smith, for Reilly, said: “A weapon is used but it’s not a grave injury. This isn’t a case where a glass has been taken and used knowingly, it’s simply in the hand.
“As a weapon it’s an object that happened to be there.”
