A Shropshire expat has a perfect view of the raging Brisbane floods from his riverside apartment and the 33-year-old is capturing the drama as it continues to unfold.
Matthew Robertson, who lived in Market Drayton from 1979 to 1994, took photos and has also submitted a number of YouTube clips.
The former Grove School pupil, who lives in Australia with fiancee April and three-year-old stepdaughter Sienna, has lived in Brisbane for four years after spending three years previously in Sydney.
He described the flooding as “unbelievable” and described Brisbane as an “island city”.
“I work in the Central Business District in sales and they are talking about it being shut down for the next month – it’s crazy,” he said.
“People are panic buying. We went to the supermarket three days ago thinking we would be ahead of the game but the shelves were almost bare even then. Now that supermarket is under 12ft of water.
“We are getting a bit of cabin fever now because you literally can’t get anywhere, all the roads are flooded.
“If you wanted to get away from it you can’t, because there is no way of getting to the airport.”
Matthew’s aunt, Trish Phillips, and his cousin, Reece Phillips, still live in Market Drayton.
He is a former member of Market Drayton Hockey Club and his father Tom, 72, now lives in Llandrindod Wells.
