Members’ rows a threat to West Felton council
Friday 14th January 2011, 7:00PM GMT.
A Shropshire parish council could be dissolved if councillors cannot settle their personal differences and be civil to each other, it has been claimed.
The comments came as Shropshire councillor Steve Charmley said West Felton Parish Council had become “a laughing stock of the county”.
The claims were made at an extraordinary meeting of the council last night.
The meeting had been called to elect a new locum clerk and had also been arranged for councillors to discuss how they could ease tensions and “function in a professional, orderly and responsible manner”.
But before the meeting the proposed locum clerk, Carole Warner, withdrew her offer of help.
Her decision came after a number of clerks stood down in the past 12 months.
Council chairman David Curtis told last night’s meeting if tensions were not resolved and a clerk was not found councillors may have to consider a number of options for its future.
These included dissolving the council or amalgamating with another parish.
Councillor Curtis said it would be a “great, great shame” if they had to decide on one of the options.
He said: “I think we have to be civilised. There is no point in having a parish council that argues.
“The bottom line is we are here to serve the village and the people who live in it to the best of our ability and I don’t believe we have been doing that for a long time.”
During public questions Councillor Charmley read out a statement saying he had been contacted by several residents in the village “concerned about the function and state of this council”.
The parish council will next meet on January 27.
