Shropshire car club fraudster, 70, is jailed

A Shropshire man who defrauded a car enthusiasts’ club out of thousands of pounds was today jailed for nine months.

The British Racing Mech- anics Club could not be exactly sure how much Stuart Davey, 70, had taken – but it could be as much as £17,000, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.

Davey, of Assembly Close, Highley, near Bridgnorth, admitted six counts of false accounting while a committee member of the club.

Mr Rob Edwards, prosecuting, said Davey became a committee member in 2000 and his role was to pass bank statements to the treasurer.

Colleagues became suspicious when they were told in 2007 the club had a second, overdrawn, bank account they were unaware of.

The court heard the club found Davey had set up the second account without permission, used it for his own business and money was missing. Mr Edwards said Davey admitted to the club he had forged the bank statements before passing them to the treasurer.

Mr Mark Sharman, for Davey, said his client was now bankrupt.
