Warning over Telford distraction thefts

Conmen have targeted pensioners and fled with cash in a string of burglaries across the county.

The latest distraction burglary came in Telford yesterday when an 84-year-old woman had £635 in cash taken by two men claiming there was a water leak.

A man constantly knocked at her door at Juniper Drive in Trench until she answered it between 5.50pm and 6.10pm. He told her he needed to carry out checks and the pensioner let him in.

The burglar checked all of the radiators with the woman following him but when they went back downstairs another man was there. Both men then fled.

Police in Telford said other suspicious reports were also made yesterday, particularly in the Anstice Road area of Madeley, but no-one else let them in.

Police are investigating whether yesterday’s incidents are linked to three incidents in Shrewsbury and Oswestry on Thursday.

Cash was taken from an address in Middlegate, Shrewsbury, between 3pm and 3.15pm, before the men are believed to have travelled to Hawthorn Grove in Oswestry, where they attempted the scam.

In Vyrnwy Road in Oswestry at about 5pm, two men told the same story and took cash.

Detectives have urged people not to let anyone into their homes.

I had some chap knock my door a few weeks back about 9.15 in the morning, i answered and he said he’s here to fit virgin media (although we’ve not ordered it!!) and i told him there must be a mistake, we don’t want it and he said this is .. (and named my address) isn’t it? i said yeah it is, but surely i’d know if we’d of wanted virgin media? he asked if anyone else was in for him to speak to and i said no there isn’t. he heard my dog bark then said ‘whatever’ before sprinting back to his van .. which may i add, didn’t have virgin media wrote on it, nor did he have a uniform on!! Hmmm.
