Shirehall calls for action over Shropshire broadband cash
Tuesday 11th January 2011, 8:00AM GMT.
Shirehall watchdogs are calling for urgent action to unlock Government funding which can be used to help bring superfast broadband to Shropshire.
Members of Shropshire Council’s enterprise and growth scrutiny committee yesterday examined how broadband coverage could be expanded across the county and speeds improved.
It was agreed to stress to council leaders that it is vital a clear strategy is drawn up as quickly as possible.
Such a plan is needed if a successful bid is to be made this year for Government money which can be spent on projects to make superfast broadband widely available.
The committee also agreed to make the point to the council’s cabinet that there will be no single solution to improving access to broadband services.
For example it could include the use of fibre optic lines, satellite, and wireless technology.
But committee chairman Alan Mosley warned that “universal” broadband coverage was unlikely to be achieved in Shropshire because of the cost of providing access in remote rural areas.
A report said the Government had an £830 million plan to provide the best broadband network in Europe by 2015.
Broadband Delivery UK, the body set up to deliver the Government strategy, has £50 million available to fund test projects in rural areas this year.
Another source of money that could be targeted is the £1.4 billion regional growth fund which will be released over the next three years.
The report from the council’s head of economic development Mark Pembleton and broadband lead officer Alison Brock said a number of businesses, communities and individuals in Shropshire, were becoming “increasingly frustrated” that they could not receive a broadband service.
A presentation was also made to the committee by Ian Binks, BT regional manager, who said that 70 per cent of UK households had a broadband connection.
He said a programme was under way to provide superfast broadband across the country.
More of the exchanges being upgraded to help provide the service would be revealed later this week but he did not know whether any in the Shropshire Council area were included.
Superfast broadband was being rolled out in areas where there appeared to be a demand for it.

Speeds of up to 100Mbps are available on Atcham Business Park, and Stafford Park right now and are provided by a local company.

Yes, higher-speed broadband is already available through efficient private companies.
Adequate broadband speeds are available to most people in Shropshire, if they want or need higher, they could get a private company to provide it for them.
The user pays is a pretty good way of providing services, I reckon. I don’t need these super-fast speeds myself, so why should my tax money be used to provide them for others?
Past experience is sufficient to lead me to believe that if the council get involved in spending money on “projects”, it will be misdirected and wasted. The council would be repeating work already done by private companies and using public money to undermine these companies, costing jobs of their employees.

Like most other things in this small country the usual postcode lottery applies to Broadband coverage. Atcham gets 100Mbps but less than 12 miles away I get only 512Kbps. Lots of African nations do better than this. Welcome to the Third World!

Then cough up and pay the private companies offering the high speed connections in your area !! a majority of Telford is covered by Virgin Media, who offer broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps at present with plans to upgrade to 200Mbps in the near future !

But the clue is in that word ‘the majority’. Too many of us have no access to fibre-optic technology, despite living in modern, urban areas, and are saddled with poor quality BT lines, which don’t even offer the speeds that BT are happy to advertise (and bill us for!)
Even Sky, who typically offer free broadband with a TV package, are unable to offer this to some existing BT customers – I believe this is something to do with the lack off appropriate access at the exchange.
It’s time the market was opened up properly. If we are to rely solely on the private sector, an obligation needs to be placed upon companies to extend their networks on a pre-planned basis.

what does shropshire expect ? its a tiny rural county with limited customer base , if you were BT or Virgin – would you bother ?

‘A tiny rural county’?
As I understand it Shropshire is the largest inland county in England. It is also home to a number of major government IT systems, and the associated ‘tech-savvy’ employees.
I see every reason for BT and Virgin to bother.

Hi John Howard.
I have to reply to you !!
There is NO repeat NO post code lottery at Atcham business park!!!!
I KNOW this to be true becuase WE actually provided (and maintain) the fibre connection into the estate –
AND it was privately funded !!!
No help (only hindrance) from any of the main providers !!!
“You” and anyone else in Shropshire can have this service too right now !!!!!
- at a price !!!
And yes -it runs at 100Mb/s (and can be upgraded at anytime) – with VERY low latency directly to the core of the internet
and it really is a first class service –
Clients on Atcham business park are enjoying SUPER FAST internet connectivity with really low latency in BOTH download AND upload directions as we speak !!!
And whats more … It’s an “as yet undiscovered Internet Gem” right under the noses of Shirehall if you like – as Ive not seen anyone from there comment on it – or mention it in the press etc!!!
Trouble is – Everyone wants high speed broadband but no one wants to pay for it !!!
Unfortunately …. like everything else in this barmy IT industry – its all on offer via the big providers at FAR TOO LOW a cost!!
(who incidentally generally offer very little in terms of service and backup)
Would anyone really want to offer really good, fast reliable internet connection for serious business use for just £17.99 / or whatever a month ??

Considering you are a web firm, you’re exceptionally hard to find on the web. Askeric.com give me free equity release and some education tools… not great considering i’d like to find out more about your products.

Hi David,
You wouldn’t actually find us on the web from the information I’ve given on these forums.
As a forum – this isn’t really the place for us to advertise!
All I’m trying to say here is that Superfast internet connectivity is available right now from companies like us for those that are serious enough to invest in it –
or put another way if we were given a modest chunk of that £50M – then that would certainly enable us to provide a lot of services in rural areas !!

I wouldn’t mind having a conversation with you though – and you’re very difficult to get hold of.
