24-hour repair pledge on Shropshire danger potholes
Thursday 6th January 2011, 1:59PM GMT.
Council bosses in Shropshire today assured drivers the most dangerous potholes would be filled in within 24 hours of being reported. It comes after weeks of treacherous weather and constant gritting.
More and more potholes have emerged on the county’s roads causing motoring misery.
But bosses at Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council today said any dangerous potholes reported to them would be filled in by the end of the next working day.
All other potholes will be prioritised and dealt with according to their severity.
Both councils have said potholes will be filled as they happen and are reported.
Bob Ellis, Shropshire Council’s head of environmental maintenance, said when lorry drivers at Shropshire Council were not out gritting the roads, they were being sent to look for dangerous potholes.
He said: “We encourage people to report potholes to us on 0345 6789006.
“We will begin structural patching, which provides a more permanent repair, as soon as the weather gets warmer.”
Nathan Wallis, spokes-man for the Highways Agency, said the M54 would also be fixed on a rolling scheme.
Councillor Adrian Law-rence, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for environment and rural, said: “We have four teams available to repair potholes and members of the public are welcome to report any potholes they are aware of.”

T&W Council yesterday filled in 3 potholes in the street where I live, the same 3 potholes filled in last April. Clearly pothole filling is only a temporary measure what is need is a county wide programme of proper road maintenance and we wouldn’t then get the same potholes appearing every year. In the long run this would be more cost effective as there would be less claims by motorists for damaged wheels and suspension.

Yes, Martin, I think that you’re correct.
But what is REALLY needed are projects and repairs that are guaranteed for a minimum period of time – at least five years would not be hard, probably longer.
This seems essential to me as failure to achieve such guarantees (and free repairs if the works fail within the guarantee time) might have the negative effect of leading the public towards the direction of thinking that there might conceivably be an understanding between contractors and those who commission the works in the first place.
I am sure that this could not possibly be the case. No contractor would ever want his reputation sullied by effecting work or repairs that may need to be done (and paid for) again within a short time and in those cases where they did make a hash of the original work, I am sure that they would wish to display pride in their work and remedy the situation free of charge, just like consumers would expect from any supplier.
And assuming that to be the case, surely no commissioning manager would want to be seen by the councillor responsible for the highways portfolio (or, God forbid, the paying public) to be letting standards slip and not getting value for money for the taxpayer by passing work as fit for purpose that disintegrated a few months after completion, no matter what the weather conditions.

a stitch in time saves nine as they say
spend more now on maintenence spend less in the future on repairs
thats common sense

why do the councils wait until the hole is as big, last year t&w repaired some potholes in roads in Newport but left smaller ones, now those smaller ones are bigger so need filling in.
a stitch in time saves nine
it’s just false economy

Can they do the craters in Wombridge Road please? Everytime I go up there I expect an alien to pop his head up asking for directions to Saturn!
