Road sealed off during refrigeration firm fire

Firefighters were called to tackle a fire at a Shropshire refrigeration firm amid fears gas cylinders inside may explode.

Four fire crews and an incident commander were called to Shropshire Cooling Services in Longden Coleham, Shrewsbury, shortly after 7pm yesterday.

The road was sealed off as police prepared to evacuate nearby homes in case the fire became more serious.

But the fire involving a power washer was contained outside the property and fans were used to vent the inside of the premises.

Cameron Taylor, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager who was in charge of crews at the scene, said they had received a number of calls to the incident.

He said: “We received calls to a fire at a commercial premises. On arrival we discovered an intensive fire outside to the rear of the property.

“Crews fighting the fire were concerned that the premises contained cylinders, including oxyacetylene, and forced entry into the property.”

Mr Taylor said the blaze had caused some heat and fire damage to the building’s fascia and one internal wall, but that the cylinders had not been involved in the incident.

Police sealed off Longden Coleham between the junction with Belle Vue Road and the junction of Greyfriars Road.

One ambulance also attended but was not needed, and the stop was called at 7.45pm.
