Richie Woodhall plans Telford boxing club

A new boxing club fronted by former World Champion Richie Woodhall could soon open in Telford.

Wellington Amateur Boxing Club has put in a planning application to turn a derelict building in Haygate Road, Wellington, into a boxing gym for juniors.

And Mr Woodhall, who also won an Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold medal, will be helping to coach the club’s youngsters as well as taking the role of chairman.

Mr Woodhall said: “It’s a fantastic idea for Wellington. I believe there are a few problems in that area with the kids at night and this will definitely help solve that.

“It’s great to put something back into boxing and into Shropshire in particular.”

The club’s secretary Sherrel Fikeis said she was delighted to have Mr Woodhall on board.

“He will be taking an active role in the club and will be on hand to offer his expertise,” she said.

The club hopes to open its doors by March.
