Letter: Ludlow pub ban policy makes no sense
Tuesday 4th January 2011, 7:00AM GMT.
Letter: There’s been a new rule in Ludlow pubs for a few months now, that if you get barred from one you are barred from all.
This action, I guess, is to cut down the number of undesirables fighting, using abusive language, drugs, or underage drinking and damaging property.
I can see why they would want to bring in a rule like this, especially if I was a landlord who couldn’t run my business correctly and efficiently.
I could rely on colleagues from other pubs to help me while they suffer because of my incompetence.
Licensed businesses are going through one of the worst times in their history with 50 pubs a week closing nationally and locally we can see trade going out of the town due to a couple of incompetent landlords.
Don’t get me wrong I think people creating problems should be punished but any ban should be restricted to the pub in which they misbehaved.
Why don’t all you landlords look at the list of the barred people and see how many have actually caused problems in your pubs. I bet you will find very few, with the majority coming from two or three in the town.
When I had a pub up north this scheme was brought in and the well run pubs soon realised it was the same pubs causing the problem and people never misbehaved in our pubs.
We pulled out of it and never had problems, but the pubs that had had problems continued to have them.

I agree in principal but having formerly been involved in the licensed trade Pubwatch schemes seem to be run [particularly in Shrewsbury] to the detrement of premises that have no problems by licensee’s being forced to comply with banning orders taking away the licensee’s authority to decide who drinks in thier establishment, if you don’t comply you’re off the scheme. Bad landlords [of which there are many] fall out with good people and if this results in conflict the ‘offender’ may find themselves sitting in a park drinking out of a brown paper bag if pubwatch has their way. My advise, say no thabnks to the scheme and get to know your customers and what they drink and make your own decisions about YOUR own business. Leave the dictators in the park themselves to drink their issues away.

When ejected from one pub, an aggressive drunk person will behave even worse in the next pub as their mood has been inflamed by being barred.
When I’m in the pub I do not want to be in there with a drunken unpredictable lout who has just been barred from the next pub down.
Trust me it happens, I’ve left pubs to go down the road due to the presence of a lout only to find them kicked out and following me down the road 20 mins later!
As for drinking in the park don’t talk daft, they’re more likely to hang around outside intimidating the rest of your customers until no-one dares venture in anymore.

Pubwatch works perfectly well so long as do gooders keep there noises out and let us publicans do what we do best… If people cant play by the rules then they should be banned from all pubs, licensed restarants and from the Supermarkets who are encouraging problems with there given away deals… Once idiots realise the punishments will effect them, there may just be a chance of correcting the problem…………
