Armed masked raiders threaten staff at Shrewsbury shop

Two men in balaclava masks raided a Shropshire convenience store and threatened staff with hammers before smashing up the tills, grabbing cash and running out of the shop.

One staff member was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury after being hit with a hammer and a female colleague was forced to the back of the Spar store in Ditherington Road, Shrewsbury.

Police today appealed for witnesses to the robbery, which happened at about 9.30pm on Sunday.

Jane Hinton, manager of the store, who was alerted by staff after the incident, said: “They had balaclavas and hammers. It all happened in such quick time, they smashed the tills up.

“The member of staff who was injured was released from hospital yesterday morning, badly bruised, but he will be okay.”

She said a woman staff member had been threatened with a hammer and was forced to the back of the store.

Inspector Jane Fitzpatrick from West Mercia Police said: “Two masked offenders entered the premises and threatened staff.

“One member of staff was struck with a hammer and received a minor injury to his shoulder. The offenders made off with an unknown quantity of cash and property from the store.

“Members of the public are requested to be vigilant for any items discarded after the offenders ran away into a nearby housing estate.”

A 17-year-old local youth, held in custody over the incident, was today released on police bail.
