Shrewsbury blast report due ‘within weeks’

Bosses at the Health and Safety Executive today said a report on the Shrewsbury blast is likely to be published in a matter of weeks – a year after the explosion rocked the town.

On today’s 12-month anniversary of the blast it is still not known exactly why it happened. But chiefs at the HSE will aim to shed light on the incident, which left 12 people injured, with the release of their findings.

A HSE spokeswoman said the report could be published before the end of January.

She said: “There is no exact date for the release of the report but we are looking to have it published as soon as possible in the new year. We are looking at weeks rather than months. There will be a detailed briefing with the victims of the blast and then the press before that date.”

Four people who were in a flat on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road were seriously injured in the explosion, while Kiley McDonnell, who was starring in a pantomime at Theatre Severn, was left paralysed after he was hit by falling rubble.

Last year it was revealed that three of the victims are to pursue claims against BT following allegations it was responsible for the blast.

BT said it were liaising with the parties to determine the facts and bases of any claims but they believed there was no evidence against it.
