Council vows to keep town Arena open
Monday 3rd January 2011, 11:09AM GMT.
Council chiefs today vowed to keep the Arena in Telford town centre as the key venue for major outdoor events.
Telford & Wrekin Council leader Andrew Eade spoke out after it was revealed the authority had dismissed calls to reopen the Telford Town Park Amphitheatre.
The amphitheatre hosted numerous outdoor events in the 1990s but the council said it simply could not afford to revamp it, particularly as it faced cuts to its budget of almost £19 million over the next two years.
Council spokesman Nigel Newman said the authority had last autumn extended the boundaries of the town park to incorporate the Arena ,which had become increasingly used for major public events.
Such events included the Park Live summer music event and the Culturefest, which attracted thousands of visitors to the Arena.
Mr Newman said: “The £250 million regeneration of the Southwater area will also help to make this part of the town park even more important in the future providing a link between the park and the new living heart for the town centre.”
The council is now in talks with partners over ways the arena can be used more and Mr Newman said it would be announcing “a very major event” early this year.
