Telford & Wrekin plan for schools trimmed

Plans to completely overhaul schools across Telford & Wrekin Council may have survived a Government axe but they have still had to be trimmed, it was revealed today.

The council has now drawn up new Building Schools for the Future plans to comply with Government demands for more efficiencies.

Telford & Wrekin was told in the summer its plans for Sports and Learning Communities had survived an in-depth review of BSF projects.

Local authorities have consequently been asked to focus on schemes that deliver best value for improving the condition of school buildings.

Councillor Stephen Burrell, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “While this has resulted in some changes to our initial plans, I am delighted that we will still be able to complete 95 per cent of the scheme as originally set out.

“This means that our vision to transform the borough’s educational estate is still very much on track and the next five years will be a very exciting time for education in Telford and Wrekin.

“The most important thing is that when everything is built, Telford and Wrekin will have schools and sports facilities that are second to none.”

The Department for Education asked the council to review its Sports And Learning Communities progra- mme using new criteria including pupil places, the ex- isting condition of school bu- ildings and local priorities.

A report to Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet meeting on January 11 says the aim is to ensure value for money is achieved for all Sports and Learning Communities projects.

The proposed revisions to the Sports and Learning Communities programme in Telford and Wrekin include Phoenix School, Dawley  being completely rebuilt on a new site next to the regenerated Dawley town centre; Wrockwardine Wood Arts College being replaced and relocated to a new site in Priorslee; Sutherland Business and Enterprise College moved to a new site at the heart of the Oakengates Leisure Centre complex and Lord Silkin School being remodelled and refurbished.

Proposals are being considered to develop a University Technical College.

The revised programme is also likely to include new buildings for Ercall Wood Technology College.
